Fox & Hopton Debut

We have an exciting new project!!! It’s a bit of ska, a bit of dub, and a bit of our rock roots! It’s an idea that Craig had waaaay back in like 2008. He said, you know, I’d like to blend our alternative rock sound with ska and dub. Like some kind of element of the spooky with the ska and dubbed out reggae beats that we both enjoy so much. It’s a genre of music that he was successful with in the 80s with NTLA ComboNation, but he wanted to bring the element of our “spirit” rock into the mix.

You can hear the beginnings of us conceiving the idea for this project in this video posted 13 years ago… in 2013. But the video itself is older than that… most likely 2008 or 2009. Obviously, we posted it as Maheekats because that was the name of our band at the time. We never officially recorded this tune, Out of the Dead, but we intend to do so with Fox & Hopton.

We let the idea simmer while we developed Maheekats and Circle of Dominion. We even took a side trip with a new version of ComboNation that we called NTO (not the old) ComboNation. You can read about our journey with that here.

After having to move yet again, we’ve landed back in our old stomping grounds in the forests of the Sierra Mountains. Since the move, we’ve decided to take the original idea out of the bag and finally finish the songs and the recordings.

We’ve started with three songs…

  1. Soldier – a song that speaks out about the youth of today having a choice between being monsters or being part of the light that shines on the ignorance.
  2. Ghost Parade – a song that is mostly instrumental with lyrics that express what it feels like to be in tune with our true natures.
  3. Sasquatch In China Camp – a song that Craig first recorded directly to ADAT and then mastered on an Alesis MasterLink.

Funny story about Sasquatch In China Camp is that Craig posted it on MySpace around 2008 and the great Rankin’ Roger himself (of The Beat) sent a message saying it was very dubwise. How exciting to get a direct message from one of our musical heroes and have correspondence with him! We never got to play with him, but we hope our release of this song reaches his approval in the ethers!

Another element we want to express is the need for forest preservation. We live on this planet along with many other creatures, animals, and plants. We want our music to represent a movement of awareness of this fact that we’re all here together and all living beings have a right to live… the trees, shrubs, wildflowers, bears, racoons, squirrels, eagles, flickers, chickadees, and each living being. With this in mind, we will donate 42% of everything we sell towards these three non-profits: The Nature Conservancy, Tahoe Institute for Natural Sciences, Los Padres Forest Association.
